In 1927, it opened as the Hiawatha Theatre. Maybe your grandparents went on their first date there. After an overhaul 15 years later, it reopened as the Esquire with Denver’s first female theater manager and an all-female staff.

Over the decades, the Esquire has hosted premieres and classics, sparked romances and lifelong friendships, delighted Denverites and served as a cultural constant in a century of change. Maybe it ignited your love of film or was the site of your first job. Maybe it’s where you first saw Rocky Horror Picture Show or threw popcorn while jeering The Room. It’s survived wars, pandemics, floods, depressions, storms, and more. Now, its future is threatened with redevelopment.

For generations, the Esquire has been there for Denver. Now it’s time for Denver to be there for the Esquire.

With a design from world-renowned artist Sofie Birkin in partnership with Save the Esquire, you can join the movement to save a Mile High City institution.

All proceeds from sales of Save the Esquire t-shirts will go towards the $875 fee to apply for Landmark Historical Status. Any remaining funds will be put towards future community appreciation events hosted by Save the Esquire.

Save the Esquire is a community-led movement and is not affiliated with Landmark Theatres in any way, does not speak for Landmark Theatres or any Landmark employees.
